When a hole appears in vinyl siding, it’s more than a cosmetic issue. Water can get behind the siding, leading to moisture damage and costly repairs. While replacing an entire siding panel is one option, finding an exact match can be difficult.
The good news: small and medium vinyl siding holes can be repaired easily using exterior-grade patching materials. Follow the method below based on the size of the damage.

All Purpose Construction Adhesive
Vinyl siding repairs are recommended when you notice:
Use the handle of a putty knife to gently knock down rough edges around the hole.

Lightly sand around the hole with 220-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion.

Wipe the area clean with a damp rag to remove dust and debris.

Fill the hole with exterior filler. For holes deeper than ¼ inch, apply the filler in two thin layers, allowing the first to dry before applying the second. Slightly overfill the hole.

Dip a plastic putty knife in water and lightly smooth the filler so it’s level with the siding surface.

Allow the filler to dry for 2–4 hours. Lightly sand first with 100-grit, then finish with 220-grit, taking care not to damage surrounding vinyl.

Clean the surface, prime the patched area, and paint to match the siding using vinyl-safe exterior paint.

Insert a thin wood strip or scrap vinyl behind the hole to provide support. Secure it with construction adhesive and fasten it to the sheathing using nails or screws.

Stir the exterior filler and apply it with a plastic putty knife. Use two thin layers if the hole is deeper than ¼ inch, slightly overfilling the repair.

Smooth the filler with a damp putty knife. Once dry, sand with 100- grit, then 220-grit sandpaper. Prime and paint to match the siding.
